Hello fellow geeks, for my first official blog post, I wanted to talk about my dream summer I had in Washington D.C. This internship was through D.C. Internships and The Fund for American Studies (I will give links in the second paragraph). My internship was through the IPVS program (there are several programs to choose from). This blog will talk about the application process, housing, summer classes, my internship, my weekend adventures, and the amazing experiences I had.
The application process took a lot of time to perfect, but was not terrible. I did the IPVS program (the Voluntary services program) because at the time I was in a community service program at my university. On the application, I had to fill out two essays (which were not that bad); my advice for those is to be yourself. I filled out the application in the fall of 2013 and I got my acceptance letter at the end of January 2014. Once I got into the program, I had to fill out another application, but this one was to be matched with an organization for my internship. Once I got matched with an internship, I had a phone interview which was pretty intimidating, but not as bad as I was expecting. It wasn’t long after my interview when I found out I got the internship! To find out more information on the programs offered, go to http://www.dcinternships.org/. Everyone in charge of the program was super nice and helpful!
All of those involved with D.C. Internships was housed in George Washington University’s Ivory Tower, which was GORGEOUS!!! It was within walking distance to the Watergate Building, the White House, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial; it was smack dab in the middle of Washington D.C. The dorm was apartment style; I had a roomate who was super nice and we shared the apartment with one other girl. Each apartment had a kitchen, living area, two bathrooms and two bedrooms. Downstairs, there was a laundry room, mail room, a food court (that had a Dunkin’ Donuts, Potbelly sandwiches, a salad place, and Pita Pit). The metro station was within walking distance, as was a Whole Foods. Georgetown is also close (I will discuss this more in my weekend adventures).
Through the program, we took summer classes at George Mason University at the Arlington Campus. The classes we had for IPVS were Voluntary Associations, and Ethics of Nonprofit work. The classes were rigorous and very informative. The Arlington Campus had an Einstein Brothers in it (I lived on white chocolate frozen mocha) which was AMAZING!
My internship was through Kid Power, which was an after school and summer camp for inner city youth. My job was to plan lessons for the kids and I was a camp counselor. I was over the second graders; I forgot how much energy kids had (I am an only child). While at times I got tired and a little irritated, I enjoyed working with these kids. Some days, we took them to museums and the national zoo.
The weekends were ours to explore D.C. and explore I did! One of my favorite experiences was the National Cathedral. It was so beautiful! i recommend going on a really sunny day in order to fully see the colors in the stained glass. As a bonus, I got a student discount with my George Mason student ID!
Another of my favorite experiences was going to the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress (both are free)! As a pre-law student, of course I wanted to visit the Supreme Court! They had special exhibits when I went dedicated to Sandra Day O’Conner, along with the design of the building. The Library of Congress also had special exhibits (they do these all the time). I also checked out as many of the Smithsonian Museums as I could!
The program also took us to Mount Vernon for a day, which was awesome! Mount Vernon has plenty to do besides tour the house; there are two museums and a river cruise.
There was also time to do some shopping! Georgetown was an AMAZING place to shop! There was a Michael Kors, Tory Burch, Kate Spade, and Vineyard Vines to name a few places. I loved the look of the Vineyard Vines store!
As for experiences, I had some amazing ones! I got to attend a briefing at the Capitol Buidling, experience the Fourth in our nation’s capital, go to the Polish Embassy for a briefing, and meet two men who served under President Ronald Reagan! I had an amazing summer, one that I will never forget! Be sure to leave a comment if you have any questions! Thanks for reading!
